…As JDPC, Rotary bring joy to Badagry: Freedom day for prison inmates

JDPC and Rotary Club members, officials of Badagry prison and some of the released inmates.

Recently, 10 inmates of the Badagry Prisons breathed fresh air. This was made possible by the collaborative efforts of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of the Holy Family Catholic Church, FESTAC Town, Lagos, and the Rotary Club International, Lagos West.

The inmates, most of whom were from neighbouring states, said they were picked up by the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and the police at different times. The 10 inmates were between 16 and 20 years.

One of them, Wasiu Akanni, an epileptic, claimed to have been picked up at Oshodi, where he was sleeping in a motor park.
Most of the freed inmates claimed they were left to rot in jail because they were not given the opportunity to contact their relatives. Luck smiled on them when the Rotary and the JDPC came to their rescue.

JDPC Coordinator, Mr. Modestus Onyema Onyenakeya noted that some of the boys were too young to be in prison. He said 80 percent of the inmates were believed to have come from broken homes, adding that if properly counselled, 60 percent of them would turn out better persons.
