ABAKALIKI—A middle-aged man identified as Bartholomew Igwe was in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, last week gruesomely murdered by suspected armed robbers for attempting to call the police while they raided a petrol station in the city.
The deceased had his hands and legs tied, while his face was also blind-folded by the robbers who made away with undisclosed sums of money belonging to owner of the station, Alahire Precious Resources Company, on Ogoja Road, Abakaliki.
Vanguard investigation revealed that the victim, who had, about 2 am, slept in one of the rooms in the company when the robbers struck, had machete cuts all over his body.
It was also gathered that the bandits also shot him to ensure that he did not survive the attack.
Meanwhile, a close friend to the owner of the company who did not want his name in print, told Vanguard that the man was murdered because of his alleged attempt to contact the Police while the hoodlums were raiding the premises.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Police Command, ASP John Eluu, who confirmed the incident, stated that the driver closed at work around 1 O’clock in the morning but decided to sleep in the company instead of his house, especially as his house was far from the office.
According to him, the people in the area were oblivious of what had happened to the driver until it was day break when they saw the victim lying in the pool of his own blood.
ASP Eluu assured the general public that investigation into the brutal murder of late Mr. Igwe had commenced.
He also charged the people of the state to always volunteer useful information that would assist the police unravel crimes committed in the state.
