PORT HARCOURT—A policeman went berserk and shot two of his colleagues before shooting himself at Lala Village of Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State just as another police corporal allegedly killed an Inspector and later killed himself, yesterday, at Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Also, in Minna, a disagreement between a couple has led to the death of a housewife, as her husband, Usman Bege, 20, allegedly slaughtered his spouse, Hauwa, with a sharp knife while asleep.

The incident happened in Iri Village of Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State.

Hauwa was said to have run to her parents for refuge shortly after the misunderstanding, unknown to her that the husband would trail her to the family house and kill her.

Adamawa State Police Commissioner, CP, Mr Aderele Shinaba, who confirmed the incident, said the policeman identified as Cpl. Nuhu Ishaku, without any provocation, went wild and killed
his colleagues at the Lala Police Station, adding that the deceased Ishaku shot and killed one Inspector Benjamin Tizhe, who was the Charge Room Officer at the police station.

In Port Harcourt, eye witnesses, who spoke to Vanguard at the scene of the incident said the two officers were engaged in a heated argument before the corporal threatened to shoot the unarmed Inspector.

They said that the Inspector thought it was an empty threat and dared the Corporal to shoot.

“The next thing we heard was a gun shot and the Inspector lay dead on the ground. Apparently sensing trouble, the Corporal  immediately shot himself dead too,’’ they said,

They added that the incident caused  gridlock on the Platgeria Company end of the ever -busy Trans-Amadi Industrial Road as over 20 anti-riot policemen took over the area and barricaded the road with some of their patrol vehicles before they later moved them to one side of the road.

The police, however, gave a different account of the incident, as a statement from the Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Ben Ugwuegbulam, said the policemen were on duty at Platgeria Company on TransAmadi Industrial Layout, when the said Corporal shot the Inspector on the leg and later shot himself on the chest.

Ugwuegbulam also said that the Corporal made it to a trauma centre but resisted treatment and later gave up the ghost, adding that the Inspector was still responding to treatment in Port Harcourt.

“At about 9am a Police Corporal attached to B Operations while on duty at plot 278 Platgeria Company, Port Harcourt shot and wounded on the leg an Inspector of Police working with him in the same beat. Thereafter the Corporal shot himself on the chest.”

“No grievances between them was noticed before the incident. Victims rushed to Teme hospital for urgent medical treatment. The Corporal later died refusing treatment by fighting the medical personnel. The Inspector is responding to treatment. The AK 47 riffle used by the Non Commissioned Officer, NCO, has been recovered. State Central Investigation Department, CID, investigating please.’’

However, Adamawa Police Commissioner said that Ishaku also shot Cpl. Chokica Inchi, who was receiving treatment at a hospital, before shooting himself four times and later died in the hospital.

“We do not know what really prompted him to take such an action, but since one of those shot is still alive, we hope when he recovers he will assist us in the investigation.’’

The commissioner also confirmed an attack on Jimeta Police Station by unknown gunmen.
Shinaba said that the attackers, who came in a white Toyota car at about 1 am yesterday ,opened fire on the station, but were repelled by policemen on duty.

“There is no casualty on our side and I can’t say if any of the attackers was hit,’’ he said.
He commended the efforts of his men and warned that any attempt by any group or individual to try them would be dealt with.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that there was a similar attack on Demsa Police Station in Adamawa last week, but it was also repelled by the police,

The CP then gave a letter of commendation to the division and a cash donation of N200,000 for the officers and men in Demsa.
