US soldier dies saving Afghan girl

Sgt. Dennis Weichel, 29, of the Rhode Island National Guard died saving the life of a little girl in northeast Afghanistan, according to the Rhode Island National Guard.

According to the report, Weichel was in a convoy in Laghman Province last week when he noticed some children were in the path of the moving vehicles. Weichel and other soldiers got out to move them out of the way.

Sgt. Dennis Weichel Jr., a Rhode Island Army National Guard infantryman mobilized with Company C, 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment, sits inside a Black Hawk helicopter prior to a mission earlier in his deployment in Afghanistan.
According to the press release, while most of the children scattered away, one girl went back to the road, as a Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicle continued moving toward her.

Weichel saw the massive truck moving toward the girl and grabbed her out of the way, the National Guard said. The girl survived, but Weichel died after the armored vehicle ran over him.

Man, mother-in-law at dagger’s drawn over baby - Family war

The relationship was quite rosy between him and his mother-in-law. But the sudden death of Daniel Okonkwo’s wife, Dupe, barely three years after their wedding, has strained that once robust relationship.

At the moment, Daniel Okonkwo and his mother-in-law, Madam Olutola, are at daggers’ drawn. And at the centre of the controversy is the product of Dupe’s short-lived union with her husband, Nonso Okonkwo, who is barely two years old.

Daily Sun leant that trouble started when Okonkwo refused to accept Madam Olutola’s request to have her granddaughter live with her after Dupe’s demise. The bereaved grandma had expressed her wish to have the little girl live with her, asserting that the presence of her granddaughter near her would console her after the loss of her daughter. She also believed that she was in a better position to raise the child.

But her late daughter’s husband and the father of the little girl refused, insisting that the old woman would not have custody of the child. Distraught but determined to have her way, Madam Olutola dragged her son-in-law to the juvenile welfare office, Ewekoro, Ogun State. There, a compromise was reached on the way both parties would have access to the girl. A document was prepared. But while Madam Olutola reportedly signed hers, Okonkwo allegedly refused to append his signature to the document. And the battle line was drawn.
Okonkwo and Dupe on their wedding day
Right now, both parties have refused to shift grounds, and even the juvenile court where the matter was taken to has not been able to resolve the crisis. Declaring that having her granddaughter is the only way forward on the matter, Madam Olutola bared her mind to the reporter at her residence in Ojodu. She also expressed regrets that her daughter was married to Okonkwo.

Her words: “I have always been concerned about who befriends my daughter. I even told her to get married on time since she had sickle cell anaemia. She was going to 27 then. After some time, she brought Daniel Okonkwo to me as the man she wanted to marry. And indeed, he appeared like a very gentle and quiet person. He told my daughter that he was selling vehicles at the Western Avenue. He told me that he was a graduate. He said he read sociology at the University of Benin. But I didn ‘t know that he had no job.

“They courted for two years and had their wedding on November 21, 2008. After the wedding, they were squatting with Daniel’s elder brother and his family in the flat rented by his brother. I was not happy with that and I advised him to get his own apartment. But he could not pay for the ones he found. After some time, their baby was coming and the brother began to mount pressures on Daniel and his wife to leave. When the pressure was getting unbearable for my daughter, she came to beg me to find a solution to it. So, I gave them an apartment in one of my properties.

“When she took in again, we thought the pains would go as usual. Although, the doctors did their best, unfortunately, she died on the day we had the court wedding for her younger sister. Once I got to the hospital, I told her husband to go home and rest because he had been with her since morning. “Then I began to attend to her. I boiled water and massaged her body. But she was just restless. After some time, she called me and said: ‘Mummy, this pain is too much. Let me go.’ And I was asking her a question, I was saying: ‘Go to where?’ She beckoned to the nurse to measure her pulse and that one noticed that her pulse was too slow and they tried to revive her. I called my husband to tell him how she was doing. And he also called Daniel and they came back and met the doctors trying to revive her. But in the end, she passed on. I almost cried my heart out.”

The grandma said she was surprised that just a day after her daughter’s death, Okonkwo began asking for all her vital documents. “The second day, Okonkwo began to ask for his late wife’s documents and phones that were in my possession. And I began to be suspicious of him. I wondered what he wanted to use the items for. Even the girl’s identity cards, he requested for the two of them - both the one that bears her maiden name and the one bearing his own name. And I gave him those documents because I didn’t want to fight him. But I asked him to make photocopies of the documents for me. But he has not done that till now.”

Meanwhile, Okonkwo has vowed that nothing would take his daughter away from him. Describing his mother-in-law as being too possessive, he said: “The truth is that my mother-in-law had wanted our baby from the day she was born and we never wanted to give her. “Although, my wife had sickle cell, the way she died was not normal at all. She was a senior staff with the general hospital. Once she became sick, we would take her to the hospital and she would remain there till the time she was okay. The senior doctors confided in me that my mother-in-law wanted them to discharge her and I didn’t have anything against them in discharging her. At that time, she had just been given some pints of blood. And I noticed some blood in her mouth, so I called the nurse to attend to her. But when my mother-in-law came, she asked me to go home but I said I couldn’t go home. It was not proper for me to leave my wife in that condition. But she insisted and I left.

“Some hours later, my father-in-law called me to say that his wife called him and something had happened. So, I had to go back to the ward to see what had happened. And I saw that she was dead. Before my wife died, my mother-in-law always liked to dictate to us on what we would do and I didn’t see that as being proper.” He explained why he would never leave his daughter to stay with her grandma. Said he: “After what happened that day, my father-in-law called for a meeting between the families, and right there, my mother-in-law insisted that she wanted the child to be living with her. But I said that was not possible because she couldn’t just expect that I would leave my child like that. Even if it is just for my happiness now that her mother has gone, I will like my daughter to be with me. She threatened that she would drag me to court and I just kept quiet.

“Two weeks later, she dragged me to the juvenile court at Abeokuta and they invited me. But because I had not finished mourning my wife for 41 days as the Yoruba custom demands, my brother had to go. He asked them to give me time to come. Eventually we went there after a third letter came. “So, they made some resolutions to which they asked me to sign and I promised I would do so just to get out of the place. But once I left the place, I went to the Lagos State government to get a counsel through whom I made it clear to her that I can only allow her to come and see her grandchild in my place. Anything beyond that is impossible. She is my child and I’m her father.”

A man killed himself; my wife refused me money to complete our family house...

Man commits suicide over wife’s cash refusal
Amid the euphoria that greeted the successful take off of 13th West Africa University Games, WAUG, at the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, Monday, the sudden death of the husband of a serving professor in the institution through suicide has thrown university community into mourning.

Sources revealed that the deceased, Olubunmi Olademo, who was married to a professor in the Religion Department of  the university, reportedly committed suicide Tuesday evening.

Olademo reportedly hung himself  at a bush in the Tanke area of Ilorin, the state capital, following the alleged failure of his wife to give him money for the completion of their family house.

Sources said the man reportedly left their rented apartment in Tanke after allegedly dropping a suicide note for his family, complaining about his wife’s alleged refusal to give him the said money he had earlier requested from her.

Before hanging himself, the deceased was said to have followed up on his suicide note by calling his wife on the telephone to inform her about his intention.

It was alleged that the wife, who was said to have been disturbed by her husband’s threats to commit suicide, however, reported the incident to the  police in Tanke.

It was said that when  Olademo did not come home same Tuesday night, a search party was organised to look for him without success, until one of his daughters remembered that she heard her father saying that he was going to the site of their uncompleted residential building at Oke-Odo area of Tanke.

The sources said it was at this juncture that the search party combed the area and discovered  his  lifeless body dangling from a tree where he hung himself.

The police were said have initially arrested the deceased’s wife  but released her on bail yesterday.

Olademo’s corpse was  deposited at the mortuary of one of the hospitals in the town for autopsy.

The state police command Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Dabo Ezekiel  confirmed the incident, adding that investigations had already commenced.

Also reacting, Deputy Director, Information and Protocol of in the university, Dr. Mafouz Adedimeji confirmed the suicide story, but noted that the deceased died outside the university environment.

Meanwhile, about 3,000 athletes from various universities across West Africa are competing for trophies in the games that kicked-off Monday.

Unless dowry is refunded I won't grant her divorce - Idris

Court dissolves 30-day-old marriage, asks woman to refund dowry
A Kaduna Sharia Court on Wednesday dissolved the marriage between one Maryam Ahmed and Sanusi Idris of Maje Village in the Igabi Local Government Area of  Kaduna State, after barely 30 days of the marriage.

The court also directed Maryam to refund N25,000 paid to her as dowry by Idris in addition to returning clothes presented to her for the marriage.

Maryam,16, had prayed the court to dissolve her  marriage to Idris, 27, after just 30 days into the marriage because of a lack of interest in Idris.
She told the court that  she would  refund the dowry after the dissolution of the marriage.

In his submission, Maryam’s  guardian, Malam Ahmed Maje, told the court that Idris had paid N25,000 as dowry.

Idris, however, claimed that  he paid  N45,000 as dowry to Maryam and not N25,000, explaining that he also paid N16,000 as compensation to one of  Maryam’s suitors.

He said  further  that he provided N35,000 to Maryam for clothing  and an additional N45,000, which she requested for to purchase other materials for the marriage.

Idris said that unless the money he spent on Maryam was returned, he would not grant her the divorce.

In his judgement, the Khadi,  Malam Ibrahim Inuwa, said that a woman could seek divorce provided that “she is sane, mature and not under any duress or influence”.

He, subsequently, dissolved the marriage.

Girl killed for refusing sex at gun point...

A gang of suspected armed robbers yesterday shot dead a middle aged lady (names withheld) for allegedly refusing to have sex with them.

The incident which took place at Igbukwu Street, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, has raised lots of insinuations as to whether the girl was shot for refusing to be raped or that she was raped and thereafter shot by her captor as a way of concealing their heinous crime.
However, an eyewitness account has it that the suspected robbers, whose number could not be ascertained, allegedly killed the girl and abandoned her body in her residence, after attempts to have carnal knowledge of the victim failed.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State command, ASP John Eluu, stated that investigation had commenced into the matter but that no arrest had been made.

According to him, the police have deposited the body of the girl in a mortuary while an autopsy would be carried out by doctors to ascertain the circumstances behind the brutal murder of the deceased.

Eluu appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that would help the police in arresting the culprits.

Anyaoku, Fashola, Aregbesola, others honour Tinubu @ 60

...political followers and friends of former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, were literally  in a rat race Tuesday night and yesterday over who would be the best wordsmith and deploy the best epithet to describe him.
Traversing the length and breadth of the state, attending a series of events mapped out to celebrate Tinubu’s 60th birthday, words and phrases like ‘selfless leader,’ ‘visionary leader,’ ‘loyal mentor,’ ‘a man of substance,’ ‘enigmatic leader,’ ‘living legend,’ etc were profusely used to describe Tinubu, whose reign in Lagos, they said, had revolutionised governance in the state.

They said the revolution was now being extended to the entire South-West zone, which is increasingly panning out as an Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, enclave.

29-year-old man, Titus Ime raped his in-law to death

What kind of man would do this?
Barely two weeks after a young lady identified as Faith Akin was allegedly raped to death by a middle aged man, a similar incident has been reported at the Epe Police Station.
According to the report, 29-year-old Titus Ime raped his in-law, a 19-year-old woman identified as Blessing John, to death.
The incident occurred in a forest at Epe. The suspect allegedly trailed Blessing to her father’s farm, where he raped her to death.

Ime, reporting the incident, said he assaulted Blessing due to her refusal to date him. The rapist cum murderer blamed his dastardly act on his “great love" for the deceased.

“I just moved to Lagos from Akwa -Ibom State to look for a job when I met Blessing. She is my in-law, as my uncle is married to her elder sister," he said.

"As soon as I set my eyes on her, I fell in love with her but I kept it to myself. When I could not bear it anymore, I went to her to declare my love for her but she turned me down. I kept pestering her but she refused blatantly that she did not love me; this made me angry.”

Ime added that despite Blessing’s refusal to date him, he had to device a means to force her to have sex with him.

“I did not intend to kill Blessing but my feeling for her was very strong. So after monitoring her movement for some time, I discovered that she goes to the farm to uproot cassava in the evening with her father. That day, I trailed her from her house to the forest. She was alone and she did not know I was following her, when she got into the dense forest and there was no one in sight, I ran ahead of her and grabbed her, and started declaring my love for her but she turned me down.

"I was very angry and I grabbed her dress. She started struggling with me but I took a big stick and hit her on her head, she slumped immediately and I bend down over her and removed her skirt and had sex with her. All this while, she did not respond but I still had sex with her a second time but I do not know that she was dead; I thought she was just unconscious.”

After committing the act, the suspect hid in the forest for four days. He however came out of his hiding when he could not bear the hunger anymore, and reported himself to his family who then handed him over to the police for prosecution.

Blessing’s corpse were discovered by her father and has been deposited at a public mortuary for autopsy, while the case has been transferred to the Homicide department at Panti, Yaba for further investigation.

Putting 7-year-old on a diet: Responsible, or reprehensible?

Jezebel.com calls Weiss’s piece “the Worst Vogue Article Ever.”

Dara-Lynn Weiss admits it: She’s had issues with food her whole life. You name the diet, she’s tried it.

So perhaps it’s not surprising that Weiss sprang into action when the pediatrician told her “we needed to do something” about her 6-year-old daughter’s weight.

Weiss writes, “the achievement is bittersweet. When I ask her if she likes how she looks now, if she’s proud of what she’s accomplished, she says yes…Even so, the person she used to be still weighs on her. Tears of pain fill her eyes as she reflects on her yearlong journey.”

A 7 year old CHILD "reflects on her yearlong journey"?

A 7 year old CHILD is weighed down by the person "she used to be"?

What happened to letting CHILDREN be CHILDREN?

Society reporter turns stripper at night...

Like a lot of people these days, Sarah Tressler holds down a couple jobs. By day, she reports on some of the most prominent citizens in Houston as the society reporter for the Houston Chronicle. At night, she bares all as a stripper. It's "His Girl Friday" meets "Striptease" -- though Tressler doesn't do much to conceal her identity, maintaining a blog called "Diary of an Angry Stripper," a Facebook page and a Twitter account. Tressler's prudish colleagues are apparently fuming that she "flaunts" her "stripper money" and believe she is using the paper as "fodder for a future roman a clef."

Woman takes life while chatting on Facebook, no one calls police

Too sad she died! A woman described her final moments of purposely inhaling poisonous fumes on Facebook to nine friends, some of whom begged her stop. Some of those friends attempted to track her down on their own but failed.

None of them called the police however, or alerted anyone at all.

Claire Lin, 31, of Taipei, Taiwan died on March 18. "Too late. "My room is filled with fumes," read Lin's final post. "I just posted another picture. Even while I'm dying, I still want FB [Facebook]. Must be FB poison. Haha."

"Be calm, open the window, put out the charcoal fire, please, I beg you," one friend wrote Lin, who was found by her boyfriend the following morning. Lin's family only found out about the online conversation after her death. A sociologist quoted in the AP article ascribed the incident to isolation in the Internet age. But as with all such unfortunate stories, the reason is never this simple.

Facebook
"Most people who die by suicide give some indication, in terms of exhibiting these warning signs," Lidia S. Bernik, associate project director of National Suicide Prevention Lifeline told msnbc.com "All too often, those around them are not knowledgeable and they don't react, and they might have had an opportunity to save a life and didn't know it."

As people grow more comfortable with sharing their feelings online, social media provides opportunity to identify and reach out to those at risk.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Claire Lin and our hearts go out to her family and friends," a Facebook spokesperson told msnbc.com.

Wizkid and I are not rivals – Davido

It’s unforgivable if you are a club regular and you don’t know the wonder boy Davido that brought us Dami duro. He is a super talented songwriter and singer who is still reeling from his impact with lime light. Yet, many industry watchers insist that his coming at this time is deliberate; possibly strategic, to counter a monopoly currently being enjoyed by the reigning young artist – Wizkid.

Davido according to the look of these comparisons has chased Wizkid into his class of fame, money and perhaps women. Their music race along the same genre. They both have well developed penning skills that leaves them twisting yoruba words beautifully together before sprinkling them most creatively down their song lines.

Like Wizkid, Davido has gotten his own fair share of controversies especially as it concerns love and women. A case is the ‘bad girl picture gone viral’ which many say had further helped push the young singer into the face of the media.

Yet each time Davido is confronted with this question from entertainment journalists and blogs, his answer is a firm No. In his words “There is no competition between me and Wizkid. I’m actually with him most of the time. We sometimes talk about it, laugh about it; we go on twitter and look at blogs.

I don’t know why people weigh us together. I don’t believe in turn by turn; Why can’ Wizkid have a number one song in Abuja and I have another one in Port Harcourt or somewhere else and everyone carries it together; no competition as such. I see him as a colleague, maybe if I didn’t know him personally; but I do. We are even planning some things together, so cool.”

It’s a reply many have taken with a pinch of salt. Already, there is inside talk that an album is in the cooking for the young celebrity which will be unveiled at a mind blowing event similar to the one held for Wizkid at his superstar album launch last year at the Expo hall of the Eko Hotel and suites in Lagos. There will be series of collaborations which will be featured strongly in the album. One of which should be with Wizkid himself.

Call it a test of might but this is one unconscious rivalry, everyone one in the business of entertainment reporting anxiously waits to see if it eventually unfolds.

As the name rings bell BOKO HARAM, Governor Fashola demolished five mosques

Is it the fear of death or the fear of Boko Haram? Well, anyways, both ends up the the same. As the Lagos State Government last week demolished five mosques located within the  State secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, following an order by Governor Fashola, banning all religious activities within the secretariat.

The demolition of the mosques was carried out by the government after getting intelligence reports from SSS that the secretariat was vulnerable to attack by Boko Haram as long as the mosques remain within the secretariat.

Hmmm! See the cause of Boko Haram to the Muslims...Do not practice BOKO!

Tibetan protester, Jamphel Yeshi set himself ablaze

What name would you categorize this kind of protest? am sure most of you will say madness. Is about a man 27year old Tibetan protester, Jamphel Yeshi, who set himself ablaze in the name of protest. Yeshi, who was on fire for about two minutes before he collapsed, sustained burns on 98 per cent of his body. Other protesters doused him in water and took him to the hospital where he's in critical condition.

This is really unimaginable...almost impossible to do. Men!

Out-of-control car lands in a Washington family's swimming pool

This is way out of control as driver crashed his car into a backyard pool in Vancouver, Washington.

"The car was traveling south on NW 21st Avenue when it left the roadway, crashed into a fence and landed in the swimming pool. A cover on the pool prevented the car from sinking."

The driver, an adult male in his 20s, climbed out of the car and firefighters found him walking near the scene. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. A crane was used to pull the car out of the pool just after.
